About us

Greystoke Boxers had very humble beginnings.  I got my first Boxer as a gift from my late father as part of an effort to alleviate my fear of the dark.  This little red girl hooked me for life.  Dusty was my first pet.  We attempted showing her but her lack of over all quality made me change my mind very quickly.

Through my teenage years I bought another two Boxers, Tuck and Scarlet.  Both were grand children of the Late Salgray's Goldrush, who was imported from the USA by Ronnie and Heather Stevens.  Both Scarlet and Tuck were bred by my very close friend the Late Bobby Marais.  I had spent many an hour sitting with Bobby talking Boxers.  Bobby was almost 40 years my senior and was probably the most patient person I have ever known.

Many years later, my soon to be wife and I decided it was time to get a big dog.  At that point we already had our Boston Terriers, Luka and Serene (see “Togra Boston Terriers").  Seeing that we had the space, I would return to my roots and get another Boxer.

Our requirements were not easily met.  We spent almost 2 years looking at what was available at the time. We wanted a dog to show but we also wanted a dog to work with.

And so it came to be that we met Monique Hodgkinson of Tanyati Boxers.  I was so impressed with her resident stud dog, Ch Witherford Iced Mango BT (imp U.K.), that I immediately booked a flashy red female puppy.  The weeks went by.  The first email from Monique let us know that Dunja had been mated.  Four weeks later another email telling us that she had confirmation that Dunja had conceived and after what felt like another two years we received an email saying that the puppies had arrived.

So arrangements were made to go and see the babies, even though there were NO red girls.  As Monique handed me the puppies one by one I got more and more despondent because my girl was nowhere to be seen! The best of the brindle girls in this litter was already taken!   When Monique got to the last puppy, she told me to stay open minded.  She reached into the box and pulled out the fattest flashy brindle male.  Monique had nicknamed him "Thuggles" or "the Thug", we called him....

Thor has exceeded our every expectation.  By the age of only two and three quarter years Thor had amassed an amazing list of achievements.

Show Achievements:

12 x FBCSA Championship points (with 2 x 4 point Majors) and his FBCSA Breed Championship title.

FBCSA Grand Championship Status Awarded.

5 CC`s and his KUSA Breed Championship Title

Winner of Winners Qualifier 2003 and 2004

2 x Best in Specialty Show

2 x Best Movement

2 x Working Group Third

Best of the Best Qualifier 2003

Working Achievements :

Endurance: Participated and passed his endurance test and was awarded his "AD" Title.

Breed Survey: Participated and passed two breed surveys, rated "Excellent" in conformation in both, and was rated  "excessively hard with pronounced protective instinct" in his character evaluation.  Thor was awarded his "BT" title. Boxer specialist Mrs. Ute Füglister evaluated Thor for his first test and Boxer Specialist Mr. Paul Marneweck evaluated his second survey.

Companion Dog: Thor participated in and passed the Companion Dog test under working specialist Mr. Paul Marneweck and was awarded his "BH" Title.

These three titles, combined with his FBCSA Breed Championship title, qualified Thor as a Grand Champion.  He shares this honor with his half brother, G Ch Tanyati Beaudelais of Rennie AD BH BT and his mother, Dam of Merit G Ch Tambay's Dunja AD BH BT.  This is the first time a Dam and two sons have shared this honor in FBCSA history.

Thor combines many exceptional qualities that one rarely finds in a single dog.  He has outstanding conformation (was never rated less than "Excellent" while being shown).  He has outstanding movement (after completing a 20km trial he still showed every intention to mate a bitch that was in season!) He also won "Best movement" on two occasions at Specialty level.

Thor has all the character traits that one would expect to see in an exceptional working dog and a pet.  He is living proof that an exceptionally hard working dog can also be a caring, loving and gentle pet animal and that one should not sacrifice working ability, protective instinct and hardness for the sake of just breeding a pet.

DOB: 29 Nov 2004

"Faith" has an enviable pedigree, being tightly line-bred on the famous Witherford (U.K.) and vom Okeler Forst (Germany) bloodlines.  Faith already shows excellent working drives and an exceptionally hard character.  Combining this with her superb conformation, we believe she will be an asset to Greystoke Boxers. We hope you enjoy browsing through her puppy album...

Our Involvement in the FBCSA

Both my wife, Crystal, and I are committee members of Northern Boxer Club.  We are both Ring Stewards in Training and qualified Federation Representatives.  I am an accredited Breed Survey Helper and have been the Helper in one FBCSA Breed Survey.  I am also currently involved with the preparation of Boxers for Breed Survey.  For any enquiries regarding Breed Surveys for Boxers or the preparation of dogs for Breed Surveys, Endurance Trials, Tracking and Companion Dog Trials, please do not hesitate to contact me on 082 850 9101.

At the inaugural meeting of the Boxer Youth Squad (BYS) I was elected as the Chairman and Crystal was elected onto the committee.  We have some very exciting plans for the BYS and I welcome all young people interested in becoming more involved to contact me.

A special 'Thank You' to all of our friends for their support and contribution towards making Thor the exceptional Boxer that he has become.  His Grand Championship does not mark the end of his FBCSA working career and we'd like you all to know that we are not finished yet.....

Greystoke Goes to Switzerland

In June this year I was honoured to be invited by the Swiss Boxer Club in St Gallen to attend various of their training activities.  These included displays of obedience, manwork and agility.  I found that the Boxers were very willing to work and saw some superb obedience and agility displays.  The welcome I received from all the members was heart-warming and I came away from their club the richer for having met them and the friendships I have made continue to inspire me.  A special thank you to Andy Fleutsch, head trainer, and his wife for their hospitality.  It was a very special moment when they took me to their home to see their puppies and I was able to see first hand one of Frau Stockmann's beautiful carvings.  This is a sight I will treasure for ever.
